Something bizarre had happened today.
Free from his parents' forceful education regime, Marik now had considerably more free time to do as he pleased. Given this new freedom, he decided to get into whatever the first kids he found were doing. What were they doing? Playing with digimon cards. The kids were kind enough to give him a few of their extra cards to start him off. After that, he had rushed to the card store to buy himself a card reader, which he promptly took home.
He had swiped a few cards through to test it out. The first three cards had worked perfectly. Two digicannon cards and a speed card. The fourth however had unexpectedly turned completely blue, and had gotten jammed in the reader.
"Oh come on. Its not broken already?" he said in dismay, trying to remove the blue card. If the card changing color wasn't odd, what occurred next certainly was.
The card reader and blue card both began to glow and change shape. When the light faded, a strange little device he had never encountered before was revealed. He gave the device a quick tap, testing to make sure it wasn't hot, figuring the thing would have to be super hot to change shape like that. Surprisingly though, it was as cool as his card reader had been.
"That definitely doesn't happen every day, or... ever. Supposedly." He said, quite shocked by the occurrence.
He analyzed the device. It was relatively small little gadget, mostly white with a dark gold ring around its small circular screen, with two buttons below that matching the ring's color. From the top of it hung an orange strap. There was a split, very similar to the split on the card reader. Deciding he didn't really have much to lose, he decided to try swiping his speed card. The device's screen flashed as he swiped the card, but otherwise, nothing happened.
He then began fiddling with the buttons on the object, which caused a round holographic screen to pop up, with an arrow spinning around it. The arrow slowed down steadily, coming to a halt, pointing north west. Marik twisted the device around, but the arrow continued pointing north west. It was... a compass? A clunky hi-tech compass? Somehow, the trade for his card reader seemed a bit of a sham.
Looking at the clock, it was quite late now. But he had nothing much to do, and his parents likely wouldn't notice him gone. He was very curious as to what this thing was pointing at, and he knew he'd never get any sleep if he waited until morning. So he headed out into the night, running through the empty streets, heading to where the arrow pointed. He eventually reached Shinjuku park. As he went deeper and deeper into the park, the arrow became more an more sensitive, indicating he was getting closer to whatever it was pointing at.
The park was mostly deserted, save for a couple that had run away in the opposite direction, screaming their head off, as laughter could be heard in the distance. He proceeded regardless, though with a bit more caution. The arrow pointed into a cluster of trees. He picked his way between the trunks and over roots, occasionally tripping, until the arrow shifted to point behind him. Taking a few steps back, the arrow pointed forward again. Clearly, he had reached what the thing was pointed to. looking around, it didn't appear as if much was there.
"What a jip." He muttered, about to turn back.
That was until he spotted even more interesting than the device. There was a girl there, with two... monsters?
"Okay, now I must really be dreaming." He muttered, giving himself a sharp pinch, convinced that everything that happened since he scanned his fourth card through his card reader, was a dream. Because monsters weren't real. They were fictional.
Then again, the stuff in the news two years ago was pretty... realistic. However, since his home at the time was no where the supposed event took place, and there was no such thing as monsters, he had passed it off as some sort of hoax cooked up by the media for the sake of entertainment. But now he was seeing them with his own eyes, he was starting to have second thoughts. He listened in as the girl exchanged words with the purple monster while she sent the plant like monster to attack the purple monster.
"How brutal." He muttered staring out at the scene.
"Agreed. The girl seems quite ignorant of the reality of her situation." A voice from behind him muttered. Marik spun around, to be faced with yet another beast. A long white and purple ferret like creature floating in the air, who's body colied around a gold canister. He backed into the tree he was infront of biting his lip, quite shocked by the creature's sudden appearance.
"Wha-Who are you?" He demanded.
The creature just blinked solemnly.
"My name is Kudamon. I'm a digimon, and if that digivice is yours, then you are my tamer." He responded simply. Marik blinked. Tamer? He glanced at the girl and the plant digimon.
"Like her?" He inquired, unsure about it. If he was supposed to order his digimon around like some sort of 'boss' well... He couldn't do that. He'd never feel comfortable ordering people around.
Kudamon glanced at the tamer beyond the trees, and gave a soft chuckle.
"She is... probably not the best example. Different tamers have different methods of training, and each treat their digimon differently. Some tamers treat their partners like slaves, such as this one, others treat them like friends and partners." He explained calmly. He seemed quite patient, which Marik was grateful for, considering his lack of experience with digimon all together.
Marik thought for a moment. This was probably the strangest thing ever to happen him, but his interest was certainly peaked.
"I'd like to consider you a friend, if that is what you wish." He finally said. Kudamon smiled, and floated over to him to land on his shoulders, draping himself across his shoulders like some sort of elegant scarf.
"I'd be very disappointed if you didn't."Marik smiled, giving the Kudamon a rub behind his ears.
"I guess we've been standing on the sidelines long enough." Marik concluded, and he stepped forward out of the trees. The purple digimon seemed to have taken off, leaving the girl and the plant digimon alone.
"Hi there." He greeted, looking from the girl, to the digimon.
"Use your digivice to identify her." Kudamon whispered, unnoticeable to the girl. Marik pulled out his digivice, and pointed it at the digimon.
Aruraumon. Vegetation Digimon. He blinked quietly, pocketing the device promptly.
