Sunshine, Flowers, and Bread…
It was usually the three elements that made the day of the Hikari family. Within the crowded housing and apartment complexes, some people had managed to make their livings the most average of ways. None to the offensive, but usually the result of suburban living with jobs out sourced to the outskirts or within the big cities. Thirty minute drives and out of the way areas had made it difficult some people to get to and from, and usually required so much momentum to get up, go and make it back to their beds in their familiar suburbs. However, it was not like that for the Hikari family; not the least bit.
Their daily grind was different. The moment the sheets tossed back from over their faces and bodies, they were welcomed by cool air and the smell of fragrant flowers. It was something that angels should have had the privilege to awaken to, and if it was any compilation, the youngest child was considered the “Angel” of the family. She would take a whiff, draw back the drapes, and see the sun shine brightly onto a bed themed with pure white and laced with the pink patterns of petals and green straights of stems. She would clasp her hands together like this morning and cry aloud…
“Big Brother!~”
It was one of those mornings, a Saturday Morning, to be exact. The young boy would know that it was today that he could tend the shop shift with his sister. However, since he had awoken that morning and ate breakfast and it was not that time of day, he had to find someway to preoccupy his time until his shift had begun. He had been sluggish and sheepish with a yawn. Unlike his sister, he had to keep tightly in his studies and keep eyes vigilant to make sure he could recall his test answers from his notes. He did not have an excellent memory, and math was his worst enemy, more so than the curious Digimon that had been popping up every now and again to torture him with taunts and brags.
“You‘re not good with school work, you‘re not good with the girls, and you‘re only a half decent delivery boy. How can you tell me what to do?”
She was right! Goodness gracious, even though she was round and seemed like some talking insignificant radish, she was right!
Xenneth Hikari had been walking down the street with bags under his eyes, his face wrinkled, and hands almost seemed like they were about to fall off. He had worked the late night shifts of the Flower Shop on the Fridays, and unfortunately for him, he had tripped over one of the tables legs and not only did he topple over the plants, but he had also caused a domino effect knocking over three other tables. That was his luck, all of his luck! Families had the daily grind of working far away, but he had the daily grind of having one bad work incident everyday just because he had two left feet!
He had spent all night potting the plants with his mother and Rosetta, but unlike a hardy mother , an energetic and optimistic thirteen year old, or a insulting radish looking plant the boy lacked the energy. It seemed like he was destined for failure whenever it came to trying to keep up his positivism or his self-confidence. He swore he looked in the mirror this morning and told himself he was not handsome, and that which he was not.
He had all the features a man would have a nightmare about: girlish face with blue eyes, he had a baby-type face, and not to mention if he turned around in the mirror and checked out his lower body (God forgave him, but he did.) and could plainly see that he had child bearing hips. They were all the features that were clearly unmanly and he had the unfortunate traits of gaining while being male. Sure, it could’ve been understandable if he had two “X” chromosomes and had a genetic make-up that was more female in parts, but he was completely male.
“I wonder what Hitomi-chan is doing now? Probably thinking about several people other than you!”
Okay, that was enough. Time for some bread.
That came back to the other “job” of the Hikari family. The young boy had lived with his mother who had opened up a shop down the road named “Tokyo Bloom.” They sold flowers and chocolates and all the sorts of goods you would expect to get for any romantic occasions. They were even popular around the summer for their special fresh Fruit Pops that were frozen and flavored from actually juices from the fruits they had. It was all natural and all delicious. He would remember taking walks down the road with his little angelic sister and going to see the other division of their family that had a business by his auntie Bella Hikari, otherwise known as “Bloom.” It’s been that way since they were little: when they saw her coming through the doors, they would scurry to her for a present, a new kind of flower, or a hug simply and call her their “Auntie Bloom.” Like a flower ready to bloom, it was full of wonder and surprise at that moment.
Walking to the shop alone, with Yokomon tucked away into his backpack…
*CHIME!*
“Oh, good morning Xenneth!”
The heavenly voice had chimed with the smell of fresh bread. It was everywhere in the lobby, and it seemed to be a closed little space of a lounge that was perfect for a café. That’s what it was exactly, serving hot chocolate, pastries, and all sorts of teas. Their special was the delicious Amor Bisquettes that they favored pulling out of the oven. Just as their name implied, they meant love, and so they were shaped like hearts and paved with a red coating of cream over the lightly baked pastries like the ones sitting on a table before him.
“No, Rosetta today? I guess it‘s her shift,” the sound of the young woman at the table with her back turned had said before revealing her face and front, “Mother Bloom is out getting groceries and ingredients, but she made sure to serve the a small batch of Amor Bisquettes for you and Rosetta for this Saturday. Make sure she gets hers too, okay?”
She was extremely beautiful and extremely kind. She could have any boy in Japan with her pink hair, red colored eyes, and gentle smile. She had worn an apron making her look like a housewife seem nothing short of hard seeing she was always working and trying to serve people. With a wipe of the dull rag on the table, she had stepped aside showing the table of food and went behind the counter leaning on it showing a smile while she looked on to the wondrous blue eyes going between the table he approached and his cousin behind the counter.
“You‘re awfully quiet, Xenneth. Did something happen?”
Between meeting Yokomon, his recent outing with Hitomi that left him in wonder, and his daily reminder of how much of a klutz he was. The boy had shown a weak smile as he looked towards the worried face and the pastries before him. He picked up the edge of the heart shaped cookie while he tried to ignore the bulging Digivice in his pocket that contained Yokomon within it, whom he recently learn to load into the device by the run-in with a strange girl.
Digimon, Dates, Dough and danger?
“No…nothing‘s wrong.”
Speaking the unconvincing words, the boy had kept his mouth open as he bit off a small morsel from the plate of cookies before him. He had chewed while remaining quiet even though he can feel those eyes of his cousin seeing through him once again, but this time, he tried his best not to give in. Who would believe a boy had a monster with him and so did the teasing harlot of a bully did at school who confided in him about it?
He only drifted into thought as he enjoyed his breakfast for that morning and left the rest of the day to unravel.
