Personality:
Having come from an abusive father, Hikari has faced incredible burdens. Being that on a very close to daily basis, Hikari was beat by her drunk father, from a young age, she began to keep to herself. As a result, Hikari generally keeps to herself. She rarely talks or communicates with anyone outside of her family, and even then she is very secretive. In school, she is afraid to speak to the point where she can be considered selectively mute, which drives her teachers, as well as the other students away from her. The only time she feels safe speaking to others is when her brother is in close proximity to her.
As such, Hikari has grown an unnatural dependence to her brother. There is very little that she will do without him. Even sleeping becomes difficult for her without having him around. Without having him there by his side to hug her and keep her company throughout the night, she has severe bedwetting problems and terrible nightmares, many of which involve her father and being beaten to death. Although she doesn't usually have nightmares when her brother sleeping beside her, she still retains her bedwetting problem from time to time. Though, in order to combat this, she has placed protective coverings over her mattress and sleeps in the nude for further comfort.
Though it is odd for a young girl to sleep in the nude alongside her brother, it is not odd at all to Hikari, and only feels natural to her. She loves her brother, though not in the romantic sense. Instead, she feels and believes that she and her brother, at one point in time, were a single soul that split into two during their mother's pregnancy. She feels that she and Hikaru are one entity and she feels incomplete without him. Though she doesn't tell him, it is her deepest desire that the two of them could once again merge into one being as she believes they had been at one point in time.
Aside from this, Hikari is relatively simple and naive. though she doesn't go out of her way to find friends and generally keeps to herself, those who go out of their way to show her kindness are very easily rewarded with her trust. This does not mean that she is able to speak to them easily, but rather that she will treat them with equal or greater kindness and trust, and this is what can easily get her into trouble. She will hang off of their every word unless her brother tells her otherwise and will do almost anything for those people aside from maybe murder if left unchecked.
Appearance:
Hikari will usually dress in light-colored clothing short skirts and sleeveless shirts. She'll often wear sandals as well or anything else that she deems cute. She cares more about looking cute than she does about feeling comfortable, so even when it starts to get cold, she won't quickly change the way that she dresses unless the temperature is unbearable. Although, this does make her feel rather uncomfortable at times. She is also rather short and skinny as well as small and dainty. This often sticks out to many people upon meeting her. Despite this, she can appear very active at times. Hikari has long blonde hair and blue eyes. She'll often wear her hair freely, although every once in a while she'll decide to go with something different like a ponytail or pigtails.
History:
Hikari's father was always a hard working man, even as a kid. He always knew what he wanted and worked hard to make it a reality, knowing for sure that he one day wanted a large family to call his own since he grew up in a rather quiet household as the only child. Hikari was the second born child into her family, her twin brother Hikaru coming only a few minutes before. The twins were the first two in the family, though they were soon followed by three other siblings, two brothers and a sister.
Things were somewhat normal in this household, though they had to move into a larger house once their third sibling, Takeshi, was born two years after them. It always seemed like they had the perfect family, hardly arguing even when the most obnoxious problems arose. Things didn't start to change until their father developed a drinking problem which slowly tore their entire family apart. It wasn't that he was a bad man, but rather the alcohol in his system had begun to change who he was. Eventually, things just became violent. Sometimes his father would hit her, her siblings and her mother. However, he seemed to overall be much more physically abusive to the females in the family.
Though her father was a great provider, there were just some things that were more important than that. Either way, everyone was forced to learn how to deal with it because in the end, none of them could survive without his paycheck. Hikari took this very hard though, as she, second to her mother, was the largest target of her father's abuse, especially after she started puberty at around the age of 10. He never abused her sexually, but when he was drunk, he often called her very demeaning and vulgar names while he beat up on her. Of course, this took a heavy toll on her. Though, every time he beat her up, after sobering up, he would always offer to buy her whatever she wanted after apologizing an innumerable amount of times. Because of this, Hikari could get almost any material object she wanted, and though she found herself forgiving her father time and time again, deep inside her heart, she knew that it wasn't enough. She couldn't forgive him, but such thoughts were pushed to her subconscious. She wanted to get out of the situation, but she knew she loved her father and didn't want to get him in trouble, so instead of seeking professional help, she simply began to cling more and more to her twin brother. She knew that she could tell no one about what was happening in her household. She had to keep it a secret.
Keeping her secret wasn't terribly difficult, as the large majority of the injuries and bruises she received from her father were covered by her clothing, from time to time, they would be elsewhere and she would have to come up with lies and excuses to hide the truth. Even though it wasn't an everyday occurrence that she would have to hide the truth, she got tired of lying. Speaking became harder and harder for her until she became unable to speak to those outside of her family unless her brother was in close proximity to her. She was diagnosed with selective mutism by psychologists, though they could not figure out why. Through her mother and father's lies, it seemed to the pschologists, from the outside looking in, that everything was fine with the Sakamoto household. Things were getting worse rather than better by them poking and prodding at Hikari, so they decided to stop their investigations.
Hikari became incredibly clingy to her brother, even more so than before which didn't even seem possible. She refused to go to school without him, sleep without him, play without him, shop without him, change without him or see friends without him. During physical education classes, she and her brother had to use the alternative "family" bathroom because she could not go to the girls locker rooms and change without him there watching and protecting her. Being that she could hardly even go to the restroom without him, teachers began to get creeped out. Just before Hikari and Hikaru turned 13, the teachers urged that the two twins be forced to separate so that they would no longer be together all of the time and Hikari could learn some independence during the school day, though of course she would still have Hikaru in the mornings before school and the evenings. Hikari's parents were hesitant at first, but ultimately, they decided to listen to the teachers and separate the kids. As such, Hikari was placed into a top-notch private school which was a little more than an hour away from their home. Every day, Hikari and her mother would make the commute to and from the school, though because Hikari's mother couldn't pick her up on time every day, Hikari was forced to join a sports team. Her choice for sport was swim team.
Overall, Hikari did well in her new school. Her grades were spectacular and she could keep up with the other kids intellectually, though without her brother around, her disorder prevented her from speaking. Additionally, t now showed that, just like she had natural intellectual talent, she also had natural atheletic talent. In less than a couple months of practice, Hikari had become the fastest swimmer on the girls side of the swim team. Though because she didn't talk during practice, the other swim team members didn't know her. Hikari even came to school in her swim suit in order to avoid having to go into the locker room and change with them. She even held her bladder all day long to avoid having to go into the restrooms. Aside from that, things seemed to be going well at first. But it wasn't long before that changed.
Some days later, her mother was in a car accident. It was nothing major, but it deterred her mother and Hikari was forced to stay late at the swimming pool and waited there by herself, or rather, she thought she was alone. She was very wrong. There was another boy who had been there watching her for some time. Once he realized everyone else was all gone, he made his move and started coming onto Hikari. She clearly showed him that she wasn't interested, but he continued to advance, pinned her to a wall, and had his way with her. She spoke for the first time in a long time without her brother present asking him to stop, but he didn't. Luckily, just a couple minutes or so after he had started, the swim coach returned to catch them in "the act." Hikari was unable to speak up about what had actually happened, and both Hikari and the boy were suspended.
Fortunately, after only a couple weeks, the suspension was lifted and the principal decided not to expel Hikari, nor the boy. It was quite obvious that his decision to show "mercy" was because she was the best swimmer in the school and one of the best in their entire league, but it was still a saving grace. On the other hand, after what had happened, Hikari began to get a really bad reputation as a "loose" or "slutty" girl. Boys began to pay her special attention more and more. They were constantly hitting on her, making moves on her, and often touching her inappropriately. For the most part though, she stayed away from them as much as she could though her efforts were somewhat futile. The only one whom she told what was really happening to was her brother, though she forced him to promise not to tell anyone. Though, when her father caught wind of the reputation she was getting, she became the primary target for his drunken beatings rather than her mother.
Even though all seemed as though it was bad, Hikari thought that she had found a silver lining. Despite all of this attention, a boy with the same name as her younger brother, Takeshi, sought his way out from the crowd and held his hand out to her. He told her that he wanted to be nothing less than her friend and treated her with unusual kindness. Hikari still couldn't talk to him, but the two of them had a lot of fun together. He took her out to parks, movies, and much more. She was beginning to imagine the two of them becoming a couple. They were out all of the time until late hours of the night to a point at which most parents would be concerned about their daughters. Hikari's parents, on the other hand, were just happy to see that she had a friend. Hikaru voiced out against this, but Hikari ignored him and told him that he was just jealous.
However, Hikari soon found herself in a tough position when Takeshi invited her to a house party with three other boys. The four of themselves began doing rather naughty things which Hikari never could have seen herself doing, but with the knowledge that Takeshi "loved" her, she figured that it would be okay. Hikari had devoted herself to him and would have done whatever he wanted. Though she would soon regret it in more ways than one.
Following their little party, Takeshi pretty much dumped her and evaded her the next day. Hikari found out that all he had done was to fill a bet that he could get her to come to their party and winning that bet had been his only interest. He didn't care for her. Devastated, Hikari spent hours upon hours crying at home that night, only telling Hikaru about what had happened. The next day, Hikaru beat up Takeshi, following which, Hikari promised never to be unfaithful to her brother ever again, and to always trust his judgment from now on.
