After 700 Turns, Thread once again begins to fall on a Pern that no longer knows what to do with it, or even believes in its existence. Thanks to AIVAS, used almost a thousand years ago, the Red Star had been moved to a less dangerous path through space. Life on Pern flourished. All but the dragons, who dwindled down almost to nothing. But the reprieve, however long-lasting, was not meant to be…

I had been at Telgar less than a sevenday when it came. It was utterly silent, strangely beautiful, but deadlier than any knife. Being out in the Weyrbowl, I caught glimpses of Thread as it slipped almost gracefully through the sky, glinting silver in Rukbat’s midday rays. The glimpse was brief; everything erupted into chaos and I was whisked into the safety of the lower caverns as the wings prepared themselves. By the time it was over, roughly a fourth of the dragons that went out returned able to still take to the skies. The dragon population of Telgar was utterly devastated. It inspired awe of the most horrible, gut-wrenching kind to walk through the ‘Bowl and see scores of dragons laid low, moaning in agony with their riders either trying to sooth them or simply trying, mostly in vain, to hide their own pain from their mindmates.
All hope rode on the clutch that hardened on Telgar’s Sands. When the day came, the crowd went away from the Hatching shocked: not one, but two strange dragons had hatched out of what had been believed to be two golden queen eggs; a queen who was colorless, a sparkling silver hue, and a male that was blacker than the darkest ebony wood and as brooding as storm clouds. The surprises from these two kept Pern on its toes for Turns to come. Six Turns after their Hatching, however, the strained relationship between the offspring of the strange pair and the traditional dragons broke. The ‘Jewels’ as they were dubbed, were banished from Telgar and sent away.
What has become of these Jewels? How are they faring in their new Southern home…?
