Dreamplague
The dreamplague is a disease of unknown origins that seems to have originated somewhere in the south of Europe, but quickly spread throughout the rest of the world before anybody took note of its dangers. The initial symptoms are drowsiness and a lack of energy, leading many to misinterpret it as simply being tired or overworked until it's too late.
With no known cure, those who do fall prey slip into a coma after about a week and so far no reports have been made of victims recovering from the disease. Lacking any brain activity the moment they fall unconscious, they are often classified as hopeless cases and taken off life-support, with doctors assuring the victim's loved ones that they at least had not suffered. Yet this is anything but the end for them.
Far more mysterious than any scientist could have assumed, the dreamplague whisks the conscious of people away into a strange metaphysical world formed entirely out of dreams, where their desires and fears help guide them into taking shape as a dreamborn.
Dreamworld
The first to fall victim to the dreamplague ended up in an endless void, a limbo of darkness and despair. The dreamworld had not yet taken shape and these unlucky individuals most likely perished or succumbed to their own nightmares. It wasn't until a paralysed young man with a lot of imagination succumbed to the disease. Having spent his entire life stuck in a wheelchair because of his paralysis, unable to play with other children his age, he had come up with a world filled with magic and speaking animals, a world of fantasy and dreams. His dreams about this world were so vivid that when he arrived in the void, the world around him took shape and the dreamworld was born.
Had the newly dubbed Ilumial been the only resident of the early dreamworld as it was forming, the place may very well have been an idyllic paradise, but he was not the only one with strong dreams. The dreams of Aleksandr Beketov, a former soviet union weapon's engineer, to relive his days of glory shaped the world into one more suited for war. What should have been gentle, speaking animals became large and powerful warriors, ready to serve in war. Technology took a hold on the world and when the dreamworld was set in stone, the war was on.
Dreamborn
When a victim of the dreamplague first enters the dreamworld, they are but an incorporeal soul floating high in the sky, their body left behind in the physical world. While they are certainly conscious and aware of their surrounding they have no recollection of their previous lives and their sudden 'birth' can be quite startling and frightening an experience, especially when they start falling down towards the ground.
Guided by their dreams and desires (or sometimes overpowering fear and dread), the soul is guided to crash somewhere safe, where an amazing process transforms the helpless soul into a new, powerful dreamborn with the help of a nearby animal.
Setting
Dreamplague is a roleplaying site set in a world of dreams, where victims of a disease known as the 'dreamplague' are reborn as anthromorphs known as dreamborn. If you have grown tired of those sites where every anthromorphic character you see is a wolf, or where originality is an extinct animal, then perhaps Dreamplague is the site for you.
