As they are essentially computer data they can download additional data to themselves, which makes them stronger. If they download enough data Digivolution is triggered. During Digivolution the Digimon's appearance and attributes change, and it becomes significantly stronger than it was before. Event through the process of Digivolution the Digimon's consciousness remains unchanged.
If left to its own devices, Digimon will naturally age and, over time, may digivolve to higher levels. Experience and knowledge gained can serve as data as well, allowing them to evolve so that they may be better able to adapt to more dangerous situations
Using a Digivice, humans can allow a Digimon to instantaneously digivolve to a higher level by sharing their energy. This takes a large amount of energy and cannot happen if the Digimon is weak, injured, or hungry. Digimon who digivolve using a digivice will degenerate, or "De-digivolve", to a lower form after a certain amount of time or if sufficiently injured in a battle. Usually, a partner Digimon's default stage is Rookie, however it may be higher or lower depending on the pair. Near-death fatalities can also cause a Digimon to revert an even lower form after naturally digivolving.

STANDARD DIGIVOLUTION Standard Digivolution is the most basic form of digivolution and is the type of digivolution that all digimon typically undergo. Digivolving via this method requires no partner and instead merely requires some combination of effort, training, and experience. However, this process can be galvanized by the presence of a human partner and a digimon's drive to protect this partner. Typically, digivolution via this method is permanent.

DARK DIGIVOLUTION Dark Digivolution typically occurs when digivolution is triggered by a partner's malice or anger. When Dark Digivolution is galvanized, a Digimon loses track of him or herself, losing all personality and intelligence to become the most primal form of life. The Digimon's objective is merely to destroy anyone or anything in its path. Thus, Evil Digimon differ from Dark Digimon in this way. In a Dark Digiform, the Tamer no longer has any ability to control his Digimon, though realizing the tamer to be its power source, the Digimon will still have the tendency to protect his tamer. In this form the Digimon may take the tamer captive. Dark Digivolution only wears off after defeat, at which point the Digimon will return to its Digivice in Digiegg form.

ARMOR DIGIVOLUTION Armor digivolution is a unique and powerful form of digivolution, not because of its strength, but because it can overcome obstacles which would normally hinder a digimon's evolutionary process, such as inexperience, hunger, or external forces. Armor Digivolution requires a partner and can only be attained via a tamer powerup card.

SPIRIT DIGIVOLUTION Spirit digivolution is a unique type of digivolution which allows a human to use his partner's data to become a digimon. It is important to note that in this type of digivolution, a Digimon and his partner do not merge into one, but rather the digimon temporarily ceases to exist. In this form of digivolution, the user first stores the digimon within his or her digivce. Following this, the digimon can offer his soul to give the human a chance to spirit digivolve. The benefit of this form of Digivolution is that the Digimon partner no longer needs to protect his partner while fighting, as the human has the power to defend himself. However this comes at a great cost, as if the Spirit Digivolved human is defeated in this form, the Digimon and the Human are permanently destroyed unanimously.

DNA DIGIVOLUTION DNA Digivolution allows two Digimon to combine into one Digimon of a higher level. The two original Digimon consciousnesses join into one, and the combined Digimon can speak with both voices—often simultaneously. This form of Digivolution requires two tamers to connect their digivices via a USB link. Following this the two Digimon can progress to a level that both have already attained in their new-more powerful-DNA form.

X-ANTIBODY SHIFT The X-Antibody shift allows a Digimon to permanently mode change into a more powerful and deadly form. In a sense, it merely becomes an upgraded version of itself. Its appearance may change, and its attacks will typically upgrade. The requirements for digivolving to this form, however, are very specific. The only way a Digimon becomes an X-Digimon is after having been beaten to the point at which its data begins to "phase". This is a very fine line between life and death. Should the finishing blow not be dealt, the exhausted Digimon may shift into its X-form. It will remain this way until it has been defeated completely. Upon rebirth-should it not be loaded-it will return to its normal form.

BIOMERGE DIGIVOLUTION Biomerging is perhaps the most powerful form of Digivolution in existence. In this form of Digivolution, the tamer and the Digimon become one being, sharing a single body. Unlike Spirit Digivolution, both the Digimon and the Tamer are in control of the body. And unlike DNA Digivolution, the subjects do not merge into one consciousness, but each maintain their individuality.
